The Capital One Canada Gift the Code Hackathon is a technology competition where over 100+ innovators create a digital product that will help charities.
How can I apply to participate in Capital One Canada Gift the Code Hackathon?
1. Create a Hackworks account.
You will receive a confirmation email to verify your account. Once your account has been verified, you will be able to fill out your Hackworks profile with information relevant to the event including your skillsets, location, links to social profiles and a short description. A complete participant profile will enable other Capital One Canada Gift the Code Hackathon participants to search, find and invite you to their team.
After completing the profile, click the “Apply” button and follow the directions and choose the ticket type that best represents your skillsets.
Once you have successfully applied for your ticket, you will receive a confirmation email from Hackworks that you are on the waiting list and will be asked to fill out a quick survey to determine your eligibility.
Once your application (including survey results) has been reviewed, and you have been accepted to the Gift the Code Hackathon, you will receive a ticket confirmation. The goal is to confirm tickets within 5 days after a full application to participate has been submitted.

How do I create a profile?
Once you’ve signed up for an account on hackworks.com, you’ll receive a verification email. Follow the link and create your profile as part of the verification process. We recommend adding a profile picture, your skills and experience and contact info. Adding information about yourself to your profile is especially important if you are looking to join a team or are looking to recruit team members to help execute on your own idea.
How do I edit my profile?
To edit your profile log into your Hackworks account and click the profile icon located in the top right corner of the website.
How many people can be on one team?
Teams must be made up of four to six people. Individuals can only be on one team.
How are the teams being formed for the Capital One Canada Gift the Code Hackathon?
There are several ways you can find teammates or join an existing team:
Teams can be formed on Friday night right before coding begins. Colour coded nametags will be available to make it easy to identify potential teammates with skills that complement your own. If you’re having trouble finding a team or finding a teammate, make sure to introduce yourself to a Hackworks team member on site. He/she will help you find your perfect match.
All registered participants are invited to join the conversation on Slack, exchange ideas with fellow participants and recruit team members. If you have received a ticket for the event and have not received an invitation to the Slack channel, please contact us
Using the Matchmaking Tool:
The matchmaking tool on the Hackworks platform is a great way for participants looking to join a team, and teams looking for additional members with certain skills, to find each other. Once you have a ticket for Gift the Code you can start searching for teams to join; or go on to create a team page and start recruiting teammates with skillsets that will complement your own.
Every team needs to be registered on the Capital One Canada Gift the Code Hackathon website to be able to submit their projects.

BrainStation will be open for the duration of Gift the Code and participants are encouraged to spend as much time on-site as possible – after all, that’s half the fun of participating in a hackathon! However, participants are welcome to come and go as they please.
Will meals be provided at Capital One Canada's Gift the Code Hackathon?
Yes, there will be meals, snacks, and beverages provided throughout Gift the Code. We will do our best to meet dietary needs, but cannot guarantee everyone’s requirements will be met. If you have any special dietary needs please contact us
Who owns the ideas, outputs and solutions at the end of the Capital One Canada Gift the Code Hackathon? Do they remain proprietary to the teams that developed them?
The outputs of the Capital One Canada Gift the Code Hackathon are all required to be open source.
How will my application be judged?
The Gift the Code hackathon is not a competitive event; instead, each team’s solutions will be awarded Challenge Badges for accomplishing different criteria. The badges will not be assigned based on a sliding scale or grade. Teams will either get the badge or not, depending on whether they have accomplished the necessary requirements. The challenge badges are designed to encourage teams to carefully consider the problem they are working on, and create innovative, functional and implementable solutions that will ultimately help the charities.
