Why am I being asked for my resume when I register? We want to provide participants with the opportunity to connect with job opportunities that match their skillsets. If you’re interested in being contacted about potential job opportunities, you can upload your resume or connect to your LinkedIn profile on the Hackworks platform.
What do I need to bring?Bring any devices that you’ll need for coding and building your solution, as well as toiletries and clothing to stay fresh if you’re planning to stay overnight. We’ll provide wifi, electrical connection, food, drinks and lots of comfy workspace all weekend long.
Do I need to stay at the venue for the whole weekend? The venue will be open for the entire weekend (including overnight) so you’re encouraged to work onsite as much as you like, but we definitely understand the importance of a good sleep. If you do decide to spend the night working on your solution (or taking a nap!), don’t forget to bring your toiletries to stay fresh throughout the weekend.
Will food be provided?Yes. We’ll provide all meals plus plenty of snacks and drinks throughout the weekend. Let us know if you have any dietary restrictions when you register.
Will my team be able to choose the charity we want to work with?Yes. During the Friday night kick-off, you’ll register your team and the charity you’re going to work with. Please note that there will be a cap on the number of teams allowed to work with each charity to ensure all the charities get teams tackling their challenges.
What are the challenges each charity is facing? The challenges for each charity will be announced during the kick-off.
Are there any prizes? For Gift the Code, we believe the charities are the winners! Capital One appreciates you giving up your weekend and lending your expertise to #UseDigitalForGood and promises an incredible experience all weekend long!
Why is there judging criteria if there are no prizes? We want to recognize your hard work and feed your competitive energy. Expert judges will score each team and the top score from each charity league will have the opportunity to go on stage and present to everyone.
Who owns the IP?Participants will own their submissions. Gift the Code is asking you to #UseDigitalForGood – in that spirit, we require all solutions to be made open source so that not only the participating charities but all charities can potentially benefit from the solutions.
I’ve never done a hackathon before. Can I still participate?Yes! Hackathons are a great opportunity to have fun, network and apply your skills in a new way. The only limitation is that you need to be a Canadian resident and of the legal age of majority in your province of residence.
Do I need to be a developer to participate? No! We recommend each team has at least one developer who can build your prototype, but often the best solutions are created by teams with diverse perspectives.
What’s up with team participation? We believe in the power of collaboration and have found that the best solutions are often created by teams of 4-8 participants.

What if I don't have a team?Don't worry – we'll help you find teammates once you register. The Hackworks platform is built specifically to identify teams that are looking for additional members and to connect participants with specific skillsets. We've also built in time during the kick-off for networking to help you meet potential teammates.
Using the Hackworks Platform:
The matchmaking tool on the Hackworks platform is a great way for individuals to join an existing team, and for teams to find additional members to optimize their collective skill sets. Once you are registered for the Gift the Code Hackathon you can start searching for teams to join, or create a team page and start recruiting teammates to work on your idea.
Teams can be formed at the hackathon kick-off on Friday night right before coding begins. Colour coded name tags will be available to make it easy to identify potential teammates with skills that complement your own. If you’re having trouble finding a team or finding a teammate, make sure to introduce yourself to a Hackworks team member on site. They will help you find your perfect match.
Each team needs to be registered on the Hackworks platform in order to submit their project and be considered for judging.
