All teams will present their solutions at the Semi-Final Event on March 21, 2020 in Kelowna.
Teams will be set-up in a science-fair style Expo and will pitch their solution to a series of judges.The judges will use predetermined criteria to evaluate the solutions and decide on the top 5 solutions.
These 5 teams, will become the ‘finalist teams’ and will move on to the second phase of the AquaHacking Challenge. Phase 2 includes attending an immersive weekend expedition on the water, at Silver Lake Resort (Okanagan Lake). Throughout Phase 2, teams will continue to refine their solution and have access to coaches to support them with business strategy, communications and legal issues. Each of the 5 finalist teams will present their solution to a panel of Judges, at the AquaHacking Challenge Final Event in June 11, 2020.
In addition to a spot in a start-up incubator, the top 5 teams will also receive cash prizes:
1st prize: $20,000 CAD
2nd prize: $15,000 CAD
3rd prize: $10,000 CAD
4th prize: $2,500 CAD
5th prize: $2,500CAD
For the first time, thanks to a new partnership with Mitacs, finalists may be able to receive matching funds through the Mitacs Accelerate Entrepreneurship Program. This brings the total prizes up to as much as $45,000 for 1st place, $30,000 for 2nd, $20,000 for 3rd, and $10,000 for the 4th and 5th place teams. Mitacs-eligilibility criteria can be found here! You can supplement the prize money from other sources and use that additional money to apply for additional matching funds from Mitacs, provided federal stacking rules are followed. Please remember that the matched and matching funnds are dedicated to research stipends and support activities and cannot be used for capital expenditures.
